The human brain progresses through a full sleep cycle approximately every 90 minutes. Waking up exactly at the end of a cycle (e.g., after 4.5, 6, or 7.5 hours) feels vastly better than waking up in the middle (e.g., 7 hours).
Best Practices & Essential Guidelines
- Target 5 or 6 Cycles: A healthy adult needs either 5 cycles (7.5 hours) or 6 cycles (9 hours) for optimal cognitive recovery. Less than 4 cycles causes severe sleep deprivation.
- Factor in Sleep Latency: You do not instantly fall asleep when your head hits the pillow. The average human requires 15 to 20 minutes of 'Sleep Latency'. Always add this buffer to your calculations.
